Amendment B Will Bring More Money to Schools!

November 7th, 2024

As part of last week’s election outcomes, we have an opportunity to celebrate a positive win for Utah’s public schools. Amendment B increases the limit of proceeds from sales of federal lands in Utah being distributed to schools from 4% to 5%. The constitutional amendment passed with over 70% of the voters approving the initiative. But, what does that actually mean for our students, families, and schools?

The elevated distribution of these funds by one percent increases the ability of this fund to augment traditional education funding. The state will see an additional $14 million flow into public schools, including charters, to support student learning. That one percent adjustment equates to over $200 more per student. Best of all it has no cost impact on Utah’s taxpayers making it a win for all.

The unique aspect of these funds is the use of these additional funds will be determined by the school’s community council which is a collaborative decision making body made up of the school’s principals, some of its teachers, and a group of parents. So, not only will schools have more money to support their students, parents in the school community will also have a voice in directing how those funds are spent. This particular partnership is a great example of how schools and families can work together to impact Utah’s children. Thank you to all of you who voted “Yes” to Constitutional Amendment B! Your action will enhance Utah’s public education services and opportunities.

New Mental Health Program for Utah Schools Is Greatly Needed

November 15th, 2024

The Utah Legislature and State Board of Education are working with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and the University of Utah to develop a new mental health curriculum for public schools across the state. About $600,000 was provided to develop the program and the first materials (for eighth grade students) are expected to be ready for piloting in Spring 2025.

The Brain Health Curriculum will provide free lessons for teachers, parents, guardians, caretakers and medical professionals to use with school-aged children to increase their knowledge about the brain and mental health with the intent to promote awareness, reduce stigma around mental health illnesses, and ultimately improve well-being. Given the results of the 2023 Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) Survey in Utah, there is a demonstrated need.

For example, the survey results revealed that 17.6% of youth seriously considered attempting suicide, while fewer than half (only 43%) of those feeling sad, hopeless, or suicidal are reaching out for support. These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need to provide effective mental health resources, treatment and support to help young people build resilience and address mental health challenges. Issues like anxiety, depression and chronic stress can severely impact students' ability to focus, retain information and engage in class—ultimately affecting their academic performance and overall well-being.

Kudos to our legislative and school board leaders for introducing this much needed program. As materials are made available, a high priority should be to expand the program across Utah.

The Power of Public Education

November 22nd, 2024

Utah's public school system plays a vital role in building strong communities, and serves as a crucial pillar for the state's economy by preparing a well-educated workforce, thereby fueling economic growth and innovation. Utah’s public schools equip students with vital knowledge and skills while playing a key role in sustaining the state’s long-term prosperity by supporting a range of businesses and industries.

The importance of public education has been recognized for centuries, with fervent supporters like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams viewing it as essential for the safeguarding of American democracy. The true power of public education lies in its ability to transform lives, uplift communities, and build stronger, more equitable societies. By providing free and equal access to education, it ensures that all individuals, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Public education is an investment in the future of our children, as well as our society. It provides a foundation for personal development, economic growth and social progress. Henry Ford once said, “The greatest thing we can do is to educate our children.” We must continue our commitment to ensuring that all children have access to a quality public education. This requires an ongoing effort to provide our teachers with the resources they need to reach every student. This firm commitment to our public schools is essential for building a society that is prepared, productive and able to thrive in all aspects—personally, socially and economically.
